Ohio Valley African American Student Association Ceremony 2024
The Annual OVAASA Cermony will take place on Thursday, May 23rd at Waterfront Hall at 6PM. This ceremony honors nominated African American graduating seniors from local high schools that are choosing higher education. Local indviduals and businesses have donated money in order to provide scholarships for the nominated students. The event is free and open to the public.
Athena Awards Tribute to Women Ceremony 2024
The YWCA Wheeling is partnering with the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce for the Athena Awards Luncheon that will be combined with the YWCA's Tribute to Women. This ceremony honors women in their fields and actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence. Nominations are currently being accepted on the Chamber website until May 22nd. The luncheon will take place on June 6 at noon at Wheeling Park White Palace.
2024 YWCA Wheeling Kids Summer Camp
The annual Kids Summer Camp at the YWCA will take place two weeks in July. Kids ages 5-12 are able to participate for FREE either one or both weeks. July 8-12 and July 15-19. Juneteenth Soul Food Cook-Off
The inagural Juneteenth Soul Food Cook-Off will take place on Sunday, June 16th at 6:00PM as a part of the annual Juneteenth activities. The event will take place at Towngate Theatre and is open to the public for $5 at the door, which will benefit the YWCA Wheeling. There will be 6 categories that the attendees will judge, selecting their favorite dish in each category. One winner will be honored in each of the six categories - Chicken, Mac&Cheese, Greens, Potato Salad, Sweets and Cornbread. PASSED - Martin Luther King Jr. Annual March
The Annual MLK March will take place at 2:00PM on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 starting at the top of Chapline St. at the Windmill. Participants will walk from the Windmill to WVNCC where the Community Award Winners Banquet will be held at 3:00PM. Community honorees include Rod Lee, Rabbi Leif, Theodora “Teddie” Grogan, & Martha Wright.
PASSED - 3rd Annual Ohio Valley Festival for Filmmakers of Color
The 3rd Annual OV Festival for Filmmakers of Color will take place at Wheeling University’s Troy Lounge at 7PM on Sat. January 13, 2024. We will screen the films of five winners in these categories: Animation, Documentary, Drama, Comedy and YWCA Choice.
PASSED - Other 2024 MLK Celebration Events
Other events throughout the OV include: Tue. Jan. 9 a Lunch with Books at the Oh. Co. Public Library at 12. Fri. Jan. 12 at 7PM will be the Shabbat Service at Temple Shalom. Saturday, Jan. 13 from 1-3PM at Wheeling U. Troy Theatre will be a student dialogue with WLU, Wheeling University and Bethany students and community members themed around MLK, his legacy and current world events. Sun, Jan 14 at 6PM will be the Interfaith Worship Service at Wayman AME Church.
PASSED - 50 Years of Hip-Hop
The YWCA Wheeling, The Wheeling Arts & Culture Commission, and Waterfront Hall bring another unique event to the Ohio Valley. It will take place at Wheeling’s new Waterfront Hall on Friday, December 8th from 8Pm-10PM. We will have decade-by-decade breakdowns of the genre, starting with the late 70’s up until 2020. Plus, there will be live performances by members of Kaligrafe Music, artists from the Wheeling Symphony, Mr. FancyPants, Keez, J. Nice, Poetic Peth, Almighty Poe, Kelz, a few surprise guests, and many more! There will be door prizes, trivia questions, and raffles for attendees. Whether you are a hardcore hip-hop head, an occasional listener, or someone who say’s “there hasn’t been any good hip-hip since my day”, everyone is welcome to attend this truly special and culturally significant event.
PASSED - Awareness Walk Wetzel Co. for DV Awareness Month
On Thursday, Oct. 12 at noon, we will hold an awareness walk in New Martinsville to honor and support victims of domestic violence. We will begin the walk at the New Martinsville Municipal Building and walk up towards Riesbecks and back. Attendees will receive popcorn, water and resource tables will be set up. Wear purple and come support those who have experienced domestic violence.

Ignite Hope will be hosting a Semi-Formal Charity Event that includes live music and entertainment, an open bar, food from local chefs, 50/50 raffle and silent auction. The cost is $60 per ticket and money raised will be split between the YWCA and SAHC. The event is Jan. 13 from 6-9 at the Wheeling Park White Palace. PASSED - Striking Out Domestic Violence
On Friday, October 20th between 6:30-8:30 the YWCA in partnership with Tri-County Help Center will sponsor a free bowling night at St. Clair Lanes in St. Clairsville, OH. Entry and shoe rental will be free to those in attendance. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling 740-695-3641.

PASSED Candelight Vigil for Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October 5th at 4:30PM, we will have a Candlelight Vigil in Moundsville at the Marshall County Courthouse to honor and support victims of domestic violence. Prosecuting Attorney, Joe Canestraro and DV Survivor Rebekah will speak.
PASSED Voices of Hope - Discover Recovery
August 31st we will be having our Voices of Hope - Discover Recovery event in conjunction with Youth Services System, Catholic Charities and IMPACT. We will be having it at WVNCC B&O Building from 3-7PM. There will be an abundance of resources, a tribute to lost loved ones, trainings and FOOD!

On September 16 from 6-9PM we will be having a Glow Run or Walk to represent Recovery Month. There will be speakers, resources and family friendly activities! It will take place at Elks/JB Chambers Memorial Recreational Park in Wheeling.
